For all of our youngest members, the Elementary program fosters skill development focused on the sport of sprint canoe & kayak racing. Elementary members will work together for games and activities for team building, then have specific instruction and practice based on individual skill level and interest. No experience is necessary to join the Elementary program, just an interest in the sport and a willingness to try! Elementary members will have the opportunity to use a variety of boats, including level-appropriate racing boats. The intention of the program is to build a broad base of paddling and training skills to create healthy, well-rounded future athletes, so practice will include different styles of boats as well as basic athletic skills and fitness, with the opportunity to specialize when basics have been mastered.

U12
As the most common starting point for our racing athletes, the U12 program carefully balances an encouraging participation-friendly approach with targeted skill development. Racing specific concepts will be introduced within a larger learning-through-play environment. Paddlers in this group may start working towards future specialization and learning more specialized skills, but participation in a range of activities and racing boats will remain the backbone of the program. Regattas will offer the opportunity, but no requirement, to build towards higher level personal performances for those who are ready.

Age: 11-12 (born 2007-2008)

Date: Spring May 6-June 28; Summer July 2-August 23; Fall September 9-November 1 (excludes holidays)

Time: Spring M&F 4:30-6:00pm; Summer M-F 10:00am-3:00pm*; Fall M&F 4:30-6:00pm (plus competitions, see regatta schedule for details)

U14
The oldest group in the Elementary program is the heart of the competitive team, although still designed to be inclusive and relevant to a wide range of skill levels. Specific instruction will include introduction to basic training skills both on and off the water. Attention is also given to becoming good leaders within the Elementary group, and creating a positive team environment. Canoe/kayak specialization is encouraged at this stage, although participation in both will continue, along with other non-specific skill development activities. The regatta season is structured around the build towards Provincial Championships, with a variety of regattas at all levels through the year to offer opportunities for all participants.

U14 athletes may occasionally be invited to race and train with High Performance crews, as need and skill level dictate. These opportunities will be presented on a case-by-case basis.
